PuR,
developed by P&G, is a robust point-of-use technology that
purifies water through a combined process of disinfection with
calcium hypochlorite and flocculation with iron sulfate. PuR’s
four-gram powder sachets use the same technology utilized by
municipal water treatment facilities. The efficacy of PuR as a
point-of-use water treatment system has been proven through a
series of CDC laboratory and clinical studies in Guatemala,
Kenya, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
An additional CDC study showed that use of
PuR or SWS was associated with a reduction in all-cause
mortality, making it the first study to prove that household
water treatment saves lives. To date, PSI has sold over nine
million sachets of PuR, treating over 90 million liters of
water.

Safe
drinking water is one of the world's greatest needs, according
to the World Health Organization. More than 1 billion people
lack safe water, and an estimated 2.2 million children die each
year because of diarrheal diseases, many of which could be
prevented by safe drinking water.
P&G
Health Sciences Institute scientists have been looking for new
ways to purify drinking water since 1995. Much of this work has
been in collaboration with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention (CDC). This research has led to the development
and testing of an affordable and simple-to-use in-home water
purification product, PUR Water Purifier. This new purifier
clarifies and effectively reduces microbial pathogens, improving
the quality of drinking water. P&G is working with a diverse
group of partners to provide our PUR Purifer of Water technology
in the developing world - this program is called the Children's
Safe Drinking Water program. Our goal is reduce the sickness and
death in children that results from drinking contaminated water.
Our program includes not-for-profit social marketing and
emergency relief components.
Flocculant
/ Disinfectant Powder - PUR Purifier of Water™
Procter & Gamble developed the combined
flocculant/disinfectant. To use, one sachet is added to 10
liters of water, and users stir,let the solids settle, strain
the water through a cloth, and wait 20 minutes. Benefits
include high quality water due to dual process treatment even in
turbid waters, residual protection against contamination, and
visual improvement in the water.
